Why is Psalms so important?
King David, peace be unto him, gave the Jewish People a wonderful gift - the Book of Psalms. Its one hundred and fifty chapters serve as an expression of different conditions within the life of King David. They contain expressions of great emotion that have endured for generations, relevant for every Jew in every possible situation.
The Book of Psalms includes everything - all that was and all that will be with each individual Jew. You can find the soul's every thought, every twist and turn, every crisis. Every holy emotion – the desire to offer thanks to Alm-ghty G-d, the excitement derived from observing His Creative Power, repulsion of evil, and the intense longing to do what is good. Each person finds himself within the Book of Psalms.
There is a well-known saying from Rabbi Nachman of Breslev: "Every broken heart will find a bandage within the Book of Psalms, to the point that you have no request in the world from the habitual requests that will not find peace for your soul in its image and form within the Book of Psalms, as if your own heart would have emitted such words, and your mouth and your tongue will appreciate the well-ordered requests."
The previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, writes: "If you only knew the power of verses of Psalms and their effect in the highest Heavens, you would recite them constantly. Know that the chapters of Psalms shatter all barriers, they ascend higher and still higher with no interference; they prostrate themselves in supplication before the Master of all worlds, and they affect and accomplish with kindness and compassion."
